INTEL SETS UP IN TEXAS, HIRES HEAD OF SOMERSET PLANT

By CBR Staff Writer

Intel Corp has set up shop in Austin, Texas, hiring Mark McDermott, the former head of Motorola Inc’s Somerset Labs, to head up its new Texas Development Center. McDermott’s role is currently vague, with Intel saying only that his responsibilities will include product development for future Intel architecture processors. He will report to senior VP of Intel’s Microprocessor Product Group, Albert Yu. McDermott directed the joint IBM/Motorola PowerPC effort from Somerset, and also founded Motorola’s Advanced Systems Technology Lab, where Motorola is working on system-on-a-chip technology. Intel is expected to establish another StrongARM development team at the Austin facility. Intel said that Austin is now the home to substantial microprocessor development expertise. Motorola, which took over responsibility for Somerset when IBM backed out earlier this year, is currently in the course of downsizing.
