Intel Corp plans its next processor upgrades next Monday, August 2, when 600MHz .25 micron Pentium III and 500MHz Celeron processors should be announced. It cut prices on current 550MHz Pentium IIIs on July 19 in preperation for the launch (CI No 3,705). Originally, Intel had planned to produce 600MHz Pentium IIIs using .18 micron technology, but that chip – codenamed Coppermine – has now been delayed until some time in November. OEMs are likely to be immediately ready with new desktop machines using the processors, and IBM Corp is promising a new program to help customers decide whether or not to upgrade.
