INTEL OPENS NEW PLANT IN SANTA CLARA

Intel Corp is investing $95m in a 200,000 square foot expansion for development of semiconductor manufacturing technology in Santa Clara: it believes the plant will be one of the most advanced development sites in the world and will be dedicated to the development of submicron manufacturing processes for non-volatile memory devices and microcontrollers; equipment will range from submicron steppers to anisotropic etchers and advanced cleaning equipment – and in terms of cost per square foot of clean room, it will be over four times as expensive as Intel’s Fab 1 in 1979.
