Intel Corp is offering a 1Mb 80386 upgrade board for 8088-based IBM Personals and XTs. The Inboard 386/PC works only in 8088-based machines, and may not work in some clones; it does not work in mach-ines like the Amstrads or Olivetti Ms or AT&T PC6300s that use the 8086 rather than the 8088, nor in ATs and other machines using the 80286. While performance will be crimped by the slow disks and memory in old 8088 machines, it will be much faster on compute-intensive tasks like recalculating spreadsheets, and can also run multi-tas-king software like Microsoft Windows. The Intel Inboard 386/PC will be available in the US in January.
