Santa Clara, California-based Intel and the IDA will seek cooperation from operators and vendors across the region, including those in China, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

The Asia-Pacific region has arguably the most developed public WLAN infrastructure in the world. Analyst firm IDC, for instance, estimates there were 14,000 hotspots and 150,000 users in the region by the end of 2002.

While the 802.11 equipment standards make roaming across public WLANs possible, the lack of a common billing and security infrastructure presents a serious obstacle to the ultimate take up of services. Intel and the IDA’s intention is to allow users to access any network in any country without the need to log on to different accounts when roaming between networks.
