The Intel’s Entry Storage System SS4200x is being distributed in two models, the Intel Entry Storage System SS4200-EHW, a hardware-only version, and the Intel Entry Storage System SS4200-E, which comes with integrated software.

Intel’s Entry Storage System SS4200x, based on the Intel’s Celeron 400 Series Processor with DDR2 memory, accommodates workloads and is equipped with a powerful Intel 945GZ with ICH7-R chipset for better input-output performance. Additional highlights of the Intel SS4200x include the customizable shell design and an external SATA port for external storage expansion beyond four hard disk drives.

Intel SS4200-E includes software from EMC to create a network attached storage appliance for the small business, small office, home office (SOHO) and digital home markets. The storage solution provides data access, sharing, protection and backup features for small businesses, while the universal plug-and-play, media streaming features, and support for connected CE devices are suited for the home. The system supports Windows and Mac and includes support for 11 languages.

The Intel Entry Storage System SS4200-EHW, a hardware-only version, allows for customizable solutions with varying storage capacities, up to several terabytes of capacity. This storage system also allows system builders and integrators to customize the storage system with various validated third-party software solutions and reliable data protection solutions for SOHO. The Intel’s SS4200-EHW is also an ideal platform for Windows Home Server, a new software solution from Microsoft to help consumers easily protect, organize and share their digital photos, music, videos and documents.

Independent software vendors including Falconstor, Open-E and Wasabi Systems are developing and validating different solutions on the Intel’s SS4200-EHW storage platform to provide a variety of options to customers.

The Intel’s Entry Storage System SS4200-EHW and SS4200-E and will be available in December 2007, starting from $500 onwards.

In a similar move, in September 2007, Hitachi Data Systems has scaled downed its Universal Storage Platform USP VM system and launched TagmaStore NSC55 suit to address storage virtualization needs of the mid-range market.
