The initiative aims to bring together disparate development efforts around Linux power management to get energy-efficient systems to market faster, according to Intel. It will be a community project to unite Linux developers, users and open-source vendors to work on new technology to reduce power consumption.
Intel noted that Linux continued to gain traction in both server and mobile markets. As such, LessWatts.org includes various mobile devices that run on Linux.
The project will also concentrate on different aspects of Linux and open-source development, including enhancements to the Linux kernel enhancements, such as the tickless idle feature that exploits power-saving hardware technologies. It also will focus on new tools, including, the PowerTOP tool that helps tune Linux applications to be power aware and the Linux Battery Life Toolkit to measure the effect of Linux code changes on power savings.
Of course, the initiative also provides Linux support for current and upcoming Intel platforms.
Oracle, Novell and Red Hat are among the project’s participants.
