Intel Corp yesterday announced the first Pentium microprocessor designed specifically for notebook computers, and Toshiba Corp immediately announced a notebook using it. The 75MHz Pentium needs a 3.3V supply and is claimed to offer up to double the performance of the 75MHz 80486DX4 processor. It has a 50MHz 64-bit-wide external bus. Typical power dissipation is 3W, idle power consumption is less than 1W; it is offered in a tape carrier package that reduces the space occupied by the chip by two-thirds. It is also offered in a staggered pin grid array and costs $495 for 1,000-up in the tape bonded version, $535 for the pin grid.
