Rumors that 3Com Corp and Intel Corp are to merge are currently doing the rounds, despite the dim view taken of such news nowadays by the regulatory authorities. Intel has never made a secret of its ambitions in the networking world, and already competes vigorously with 3Com in the networking interface card market. Intel expanded its NIC business last year with the acquisition of technology from Microdyne Corp, Xircom Inc and Case Technology A/S, and has said it sees networking technology as one of the drivers of the Intel architecture. The two engaged in a fierce pricing war over NICs last year.
