Intel hires Qualcomm executive to strengthen its mobile chips business

Faintuch will be co-managing Intel’s Platform Engineering Group with Josh Walden.

By CBR Staff Writer

Intel has hired Amir Faintuch, the president of Qualcomm Atheros as the senior VP and co-general manager of Intel’s Platform Engineering Group.

Faintuch was the general manager of the Qualcomm Atheros computer business that dealt with wireless connectivity and location technology targeting to mobile computing and consumer electronics businesses.

Intel could use Faintuch’s expertise in mobile and Internet- connected gadgets.

Reportedly, Intel is currently less experienced in designing system on chip (SoCs), which are used to integrate components of electronic systems, mostly in tablets and smartphones.

By hiring Faintuch, who is experienced in designing SoCs, Intel might be planning to use his expertise to boost its own SoCs strategy.

Previously the chipmaker made an agreement with Rockchip, Chinese semiconductor maker to make chips for the low cost Android based tablets, as an attempt to fast track its SoCs strategy.

The Intel Platform Engineering Group is presently being managed by Josh Walden who joined the company in 1983, and now Faintuch will be co managing the group with Walden.
