Intel, Google to jointly work to optimise Android for Atom processors

OEMs expected to leverage the x86 developer ecosystem to drive the adoption of the Android platform

By CBR Staff Writer

Intel and Google will jointly work to enable and optimise future versions of Android platform for Intel’s family of low power Atom processors.

The aim of the collaboration is to enable future versions of the Android platform to support Intel technology in addition to other architectures.

The joint effort will leverage the open-source accessibility of the Android platform to speed time-to-market of Intel technology-based smartphones running the Android platform.

Mobile device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and wireless operators will be able to draw upon the performance and low power capabilities of Intel architecture and leverage the x86 developer ecosystem to drive the adoption of the Android platform.

Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini said by optimising the Android platform for Intel architecture, they bring a powerful new capability to market that will accelerate more industry adoption and choice, and bring exciting new products to market that harness the combined potential of Intel technology and the Android platform.

Google senior vice president of Mobile Andy Rubin said, "Combining Android with Intel’s low power smartphone roadmap opens up more opportunity for innovation and choice."
