In a bid to expand its presence in the wearable technology market Intel has acquired the US-based health application wearable device manufacturer BASIS Science for an undisclosed sum.
The transaction is expected to support the company’s strategy is to create wearable reference devices, SoCs and other technology platforms used in creation of wearable products.
BASIS Science is expected to complement Intel’s wearable products focus and expand the company’s capabilities in the segment.
Intel New Devices Group vice president and general manager Mike Bell said the acquisition of BASIS Science provides immediate entry into the wearable devices market for health tracking.
"As we accelerate our position in wearables, we will build upon this foundation to deliver products that bring people greater utility and value," Bell added.
The acquisition would allow Intel to access new technology and expand its team with the addition of BASIS’s staff, who have been working on wearable device technologies for health and fitness applications.
Following the deal, BASIS Science CEO Jef Holove will join as general manager for Intel’s New Devices Group, while the company’s employees will continue to work on future wearable initiatives at Intel.
Jef Holove said Intel is a great fit for Basis products, employees and consumers.
"The acquisition brings access to Intel resources, expertise and global scale as we work together to explore new possibilities of wearable technology," Holove added.
BASIS Science had earlier created an advanced health tracker, wrist-worn device called the Basis band, which could read user’s physiological metrics such as heart rate in order to help people get fit, sleep better and reduce stress.
