In order to strengthen its networking and computational capabilities which boost its chip-level expertise, Intel has acquired the InfiniBand business of QLogic Corp.
InfiniBand is a franchise of QLogic Corp.
A statement by Intel said this acquisition was made to enhance their networking portfolio and provide computing fabric technology that is scalable.
InfiniBand’s workforce is to join Intel as part of the deal.
InfiniBand is a low-latency, high-bandwidth systems connecting standard that enables high-speed data delivery over short distances, for instance, between two adjacent data centers.
Supercomputing analysts have predicted the industry should be able to implement exascale computing by 2018, which refers to capabilities beyond the petascale, existing currently.
The cash deal with the networking products maker QLogic is valued at $125m.
The impact will be neutral on its shares, says California-based QLogic.
