Boulder, Colorado-based 1.8 disk drive pioneer Integral Peripherals Inc has launched a family of drives that fit into the PCMCIA card slot. The company claims that the drives also offer shock ratings unparalleled in the hard disk drive industry. The Ranger Model 1841P measures 0.41 in height and is claimed to be the world’s first 40Mb PCMCIA Type III-compatible 1.8 drive. The Cobra Model 1882P is 0.49 high and is claimed to be the highest capacity 1.8 drive, storing 85Mb. Both products have an operating shock rating of 100Gs and non-operating shock of 500Gs and are being produced at Integral’s pilot facility in Boulder. Integral has also specified rotational shock absorption levels. They draw 10mW in sleep mode, spin up in 1.5 seconds and have average seek time of 18mS.Evaluation units are $405 and $475 respectively, now, with volume of both planned for the first quarter.
