The 1.8 disk drive is shooting up the capacity curve followed before it by 3.5 and 2.5 drives, but storing 420Mb uncompressed on a 1.8 disk drive still sounds pretty phenomenal, but that is what Boulder, Colorado-based Integral Peripherals Inc claims for its new three-platter, six-head Cobalt 8420PA PCMCIA Type III disk drive. The company also has two-platter, four head Viper drives and has added a Viper 8260PA at 260Mb and a 8340PA at 340Mb. They measure 2.1 by 3.4 by 0.41 thick. All models incorporate Integral’s patented, proprietary dynamic head loading, which ensures that the read-write heads never come in contact and are said to withstand 750 Gs of shock. Integral’s Viper is 8260PA out now in evaluation quantities at $500, and the Viper 8340PA and Cobalt 8420PA will be available in evaulation quantities in first quarter 1995 at $600 and $700 respectively.
