Instagram has blocked advert tags for some of the terms linked with the alleged illicit sale of drugs via its service.
The latest move by the online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service comes after it was asked to act in response to a probe carried out by BBC’s social media series #BBCtrending.
The reporters had exposed several photos and videos of narcotics published together with text promoting their sale via the Facebook-owned service.
Instagram spokeswoman told BBC that the company has a clear set of rules about what is and isn’t allowed on the site.
"We encourage people who come across illegal or inappropriate content to report it to us using the built-in reporting tools next to every photo, video or comment, so we can take action," spokeswoman said.
"People can’t buy things on Instagram, we are simply a place where people share photos and videos."
According to BBC, Instagram is not the only social networking service advertising drugs, there are also cases of the practise in comments below some videos on Google’s YouTube for the sales of drugs.
In August, there were reports of adverts of banned psychedelics 2C-I and 2CB via the app.
