Inprise Corp is going up against IBM Corp and BEA Systems Inc with the launch yesterday of an application server intended for companies developing server-based transaction systems. The company says that the software, which is based on Inprise’s VisiBroker Corba software, can support applications built from enterprise java beans (EJB) and Corba on a network.

Steve Yellenberg, director of product management at Insprise, denied that the company, formerly known as Borland, was directly taking on IBM and BEA, saying that the firm’s tools business differentiated the company the other companies. However, BEA launched a similar app server at the beginning of this week, and Yellenberg said that where the products overlapped they would be competing.

Inprise envisages customers using its tools, such as Jbuilder, to build its applications, which would then be deployed using the application server. Yellenberg said that Inprise can then offer customers the missing piece of the puzzle with App Center, software for managing applications deployed on the network. Yellenberg said that the company is developing a new version of the management software that to work with its application server.

Separately, the company said that it has collaborated with Sun on developing a Linux version of the Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) platform. The agreement will enable programmers to develop and run applications based on the Java 2 platform and deploy them on Linux workstations and servers, via a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). รก
