The Innovtekh firm in Dnepropetrovsk has developed what it claims is a cheap but functional pager for the domestic Russian market. The RT-2 system consists of portable pagers carried by users and a radio transmitter. The RT-2 system covers area with radius of 20 miles and is capable of supporting more than 1m users. The pagers can receive and store up to 16 messages, each up to 120 characters long. All components are produced in Russia which the firm says makes the price of the system less any offered by foreign companies. At present the system is in use at the Zaporozhskaya nuclear power plant (Energodar). It is expected that the system will be available to anyone in Dnepropetrovsk willing to pay the user fee. Innovtekh was formed in 1991 as a limited liability joint stock company.
