INFORMIX SEEKS TO SEDUCE SYBASE USERS WITH MIGRATION TOOLKIT

By CBR Staff Writer

Informix Software Inc, Menlo Park, California, is out to try and seduce Sybase Inc users via a new Sybase Migration Programme which includes four components bundled with on-site consulting services. A Migration Toolkit scans Sybase SQL, flags Sybase extensions, and then converts them to Informix SQL syntax. The software is claimed to convert Sybase database schemas, function calls and stored procedures to Informix automatically. The Migration Toolkit catches about 90% of the Sybase extensions, according to Patricia Lai, Informix marketing manager for servers and communications. Informix engineers manually change the remaining extensions to Informix code, she said. Customers that want co-existing Informix and Sybase applications can use Informix’s gateway software products to create individual implementations; otherwise the migration is not reversible, she said. Prices for the Migration Programme vary, and Ms Lai declined to give examples.
