Manhattan-based Information Builders Inc has announced versions of its EDA/SQL middleware for Microsoft Corp’s Windows NT and its Open Data Base Connectivity standard. The deal with Microsoft sees Information Builders releasing its EDA/Open Gateway for NT and OS/2. This enables DB/Lib and clients supporting Open Data Base Connectivity to access data on legacy systems through EDA/SQL. Consisting of an EDA/Application Programmable Interface bundled with the EDA/Link communications software and some Microsoft technology, it is a continuation of Information Builders’ Open Data Base Connectivity support, which began last year when the firm shipped its EDA/Extender software for the Microsoft offering. Information Builders is also rolling out its EDA/Link Gateway for NT, which enables EDA/SQL client applications on personal computers to hook into Microsoft Corp’s SNA Server within Windows NT Advanced Server, again to reach legacy data through EDA/SQL. US pricing on the products is circa $5,000. Sources within Information Builders, which has sold only 600 copies of EDA/SQL on any system, admitted that it was not the most important technology relationship that the firm had signed for EDA/SQL: You have to hook into every initiative, he said, You wouldn’t be middleware otherwise. Wembley, Middlesex-based Information Builders UK’s recently-signed deal with ICL Plc – to be announced soon – could be more effective in pushing the product into ICL’s strong local government customer base. Information Builders is also planning to announce its object-oriented graphical user interface database client by June at the latest. To compete with the likes of Microsoft Access, the product will be called Focus Reporter.
