All this talk of real-time and embedded Java has prompted Lucent Technologies Inc to admit its Inferno network operating system kernel isn’t yet what you might call hard real time. It says Inferno isn’t intended to be a real-time operating system; it is a network operating system with a degree of soft real time capabilities. To date, our soft real time capabilities have been sufficient to meet our customer’s requirements. It says it will add more hard RTOS capabilities, as customers request them.
