Going back on an agreement with joint venture partner Acer Inc of Taiwan, Wipro Ltd, one of India’s leading computer firms, plans to bring back its own brand of PCs and servers. Under the agreement with Acer, Wipro had planned to discontinue the line. Wipro-Acer – the hybrid brand that resulted from the joint venture – was not ranked in the same league as multinational brands such as Compaq Computer Corp, IBM Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co. Wipro dealers said the customer was not willing to pay a premium for the Wipro-Acer brand name. Now, both Wipro and Acer will be marketed as two different brands in India.
