Internet users in India have accused Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL), the government owned monopoly internet service provider and long distance carrier, of intentionally blocking three sites Vocaltech, Voxware and Netspeak. These sites allow users to speak to each other with the help of specially designed software at internet subscription rates, resulting in heavy revenue losses to telephone firms in the US and other developed countries. Though internet telephony is yet to take off in India, VSNL is said to be guarding its long distance revenue. VSNL, however denies blocking these sites though they claim that internet telephony is illegal according to the Indian Post and Telegraph Act.
