IndiaÆs National Association of Software & Service Companies, Nasscom, says software exports increased by 68% in the first quarter of 1998-99, between April and March. Software exports were $534m in the first quarter of 98/99 as compared to $310m in the same period a year ago. But the figures provided by the Directorate-General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics – the state research organization – show that software exports for the first quarter ended June 1998 amount to $12.6m û only 2% of the Nasscom figures. According to Nasscom, the discrepancy arises out of the fact that the DGCI&S does not take into account that most software exports are done through communications links and not involve any physical movement of products. Most government departments like the Department of Electronics and the Ministry of Commerce used the data provided by Nasscom.
