French software house Ilog SA has won a contract from Qualcomm Inc of San Diego, California, which will use the Ilog Views product to build the graphical user interfaces for the gateways it is supplying to GlobalStar LLP, the satellite consortium led by Loral Space and Communications Ltd. The GlobalStar low-earth- orbiting satellite digital telecommunications system aims to offer wireless telephone and digital telecommunications services worldwide beginning in 1998. Qualcomm is charged with designing and manufacturing the satellite system’s gateways to public- switched telephone network service providers and the customer. The connection to the user’s hand-held phone is made via Globalstar’s Constellation satellites. The Globalstar contract marks Ilog’s second satellite project. Ilog Views is also being used in a similar fashion for the Iridium LLC satellite project led by Motorola Inc.
