IET uses idea management for large-scale membership engagement

The Institute of Engineering and Technology uses Wazoku to increase engagement among its 150,000 international members.

By Claire Vanner

The Institution of Engineering and Technology has turned to idea management firm Wazoku to increase engagement among its membership by capturing, discussing and sharing ideas.

Many its 150,000 members have not been as involved in shaping the organisation as the IET would like. The IET is therefore now aiming to get those members capturing, discussing and sharing ideas that can help maintain its reputation for excellence and for inspiring future generations about science, technology and engineering.

Michelle Richmond, director of membership and professional development at the IET, said: "Member engagement is key to the on-going success of such a large membership organisation as the IET. Wazoku is intuitive, flexible and enables us to continue to develop a more engaged and dynamic membership."

Part of an on-going process of improvement within the IET involves its members submitting ideas as to how the organisation could improve its operations. However, without an idea management solution tool to capture those ideas and open up the lines of communication meant that some of the suggestions did not get developed to their full potential or feedback on the ideas was not always evident.

The Idea Spotlight system will encourage discussion and engagement between members, capture and track each idea and enable the IET to communicate with its members in an open and transparent way.

Using Wazoku’s application, IET members submit their ideas for improvement. Other members can add comments, discuss and develop the idea until it is passed to a review board for feedback and sign off, before implementation.

Simon Hill, MD and founder of Wazoku, said: "IET is an ambitious organisation that recognises the importance of innovation and member engagement and we are excited at the prospect of working with some of the powerful thinkers within it."
