The IEEE’s 802.11 Committee has now decided on the frequency-hopping sequences to be used within its forthcoming standard for wireless local networks: they are based on proposals from Carlsbad, California-based BreezeCom Inc, formerly known as Lannair. It says that BreezeCom’s proposal was selected because it meets the requirements of the US Federal Communications Commission for unlicensed use of spread-spectrum, frequency hopping radios’ I bands for industrial, scientific, or medical settings. In 1994, the Committee adopted a Physical Layer specification based on a proposal by Mountain View, California-based Proxim Inc. BreezeCom says it expects the standard to be finally adopted by the middle of the year.
