Offered as part of the ARIS BPM platform, Process Event Monitor (PEM) gives users process-relevant information on business events on a continuous, real-time basis.
The ARIS PEM software is built on a technology framework developed by BAM specialist Systar. Systar’s BusinessBridge software provides real-time information about the status and results of various operations, processes, and transactions to drive more informed decision making. The software sniffs out events from business processes or integration software (from data streams like transactional systems and process/message queues) and alerts users or applications on some follow-up action. BAM systems are real-time, in that the data analyzed or displayed is not dependent upon a user refreshing a query.
Wolfram Jost, head of product strategy and development at Saarbrucken-based IDS Scheer, called it a critical addition to the ARIS Platform portfolio that meets the demands of real-time analysis.
Jost also said that IDS Scheer offers a complementary module in its ARIS suite called Process Performance Manager (PPM) that enables the company to fulfill all requirements for strategic, tactical and operational monitoring of business processes.
IDS Scheer is not the only BPM vendor to recently add BAM capabilities to its suite. Last month, Savvion also entered into a partnership with Systar to blend blend real-time event monitoring into its core BPM platform. Towards the end of last year, HandySoft also released a BAM component for its Bizflow BPM platform.
Our View
Event-based BAM is still a nascent technology market, but one that is expected to flourish as companies strive for real-time insights into their business operations; Gartner predicts that by 2012 average BAM latency requirements will decrease to less than a minute.
BAM also is not considered to be a standalone technology. Rather it is process-oriented by nature and needs to be applied to specific business applications. One area that holds great promise is in process optimization — to drive real-time response to certain business events or alert users on various problems or opportunities that might require a new or changed event-handling process to be defined. As a result BAM is now starting to become a de facto feature of BPM and integration software.
Perhaps one of the unsung heroes in BPM, IDS Scheer is starting to pump richer and broader capabilities into its ARIS BPM suite in cohorts with partners like E2E Technologies and Systar. Technically ARIS can now stand toe-to-toe against any BPM suite in the market. The challenge for IDS Scheer is marketing itself correctly and removing some of the complexity from its broad and comprehensive BPM suite that covers process management, analysis, and now real-time event tracking and processing. Aligning itself with mainstream business application players like SAP also helps.
