iD2 Technologies Inc has partnered with Microsoft Corp to provide smart card security software for a Windows environment. The Stockholm, Sweden-based company has been awarded Cryptography Service Provider (CSP) status by Redmond. This means that it will provide cryptographic ‘plug-ins’ for Microsoft Windows 2000 and other suites – based around its iD2 Personal 2.0 client. This, along with a smart card reader, identifies users and digital signatures. So the software could be used to make an application such as Microsoft Outlook a secure email client. Niclas Klintheim, market development manager, claims that iD2 is Europe’s biggest smart card security firm. In addition to Microsoft, it has partnered with Compaq Computer Corp and Gemplus Associates International.
