ICL Ltd launched an X400 messaging service, Carrier400, and has chosen to base the system on hardware from Stratus Computer Inc in preference to fault tolerant rival Tandem Computers Inc. ICL will act as a value added reseller for the Stratus XA2000 range and with Carrier400, claims to be the first network provider to implement CCITT’s 1988 X400 messaging standards. ICL says it dec ided on Stratus kit for its hardware fault-tolerance, greater flexibili ty, and ICL’s in-house knowledge of the Stratus range, gathered from the bespoke networking pacts won by the two companies in recent years. The new product, developed for the top end of the X400 market, will be aim ed at continental European PTTs, privately owned public network oper ators, managed data network services companies who buy lines from PTTs, and communities of interest opera tors, such as the airline industry and Customs & Excise. Stratus, of Marlborough, Massachusetts says it is delighted because it has been trying to increase its penetration of the data communications market.
