In a development that ICL Plc will point to to emphasise its autonomy of action despite being 80%-owned by Fujitsu Ltd, the company has won an OEM contract from C Itoh & Co’s C Itoh Techno-Science Co, which will market ICL’s Sparc-based DRS 6000 Unix machines in Japan. The choice of the DRS 6000 is something of a snub for IBM Corp too, because although Techno-Science handles Sun Microsystems Inc machines, it has been the sole Wang Laboratories systems integrator in Japan for 20 years, and the future mapped out for Wang users is IBM’s RS/6000 or AS/400..bp 0 DRS 6000 in Italy, where it is to install an integrated computer system at the Ospedale Martini hospital in Turin, building on work done for the UK state Health Service. The second phase will involve Series 39s.
