ICL IN FOR $100m OF STORAGE TECHNOLOGY’s 4980 TAPES

By CBR Staff Writer

ICL Ltd is to be the first OEM customer for Storage Technology Corp’s new 4980 IBM 3480-type 18-track cartridge tape drive for use on the Series 39 mainframe family. The Louisville, Colorado company says that the multi-year agreement with ICL is worth over $100m. The OEM version of the drive is to be formally announced at the Hanover Fair next week. ICL’s first OEM pact with StorageTek was in 1980, when it signed for the 1900 series nine track subsystems. The 4980 uses half-inch cartridges and is compatible with the IBM 3480 tape format.
