ICL HAS PERSONAL COMPUTER POINT-OF-SALE, DEAL WITH ELECTRONIC DATA

By CBR Staff Writer

The ICL Retail Systems unit of ICL Plc has announced TeamPos, a series of point-of-sale terminals consisting of a collection of hardware and software modules, which, combined with a standard personal computer, form a fully customised yet economical point-of-sale system, the firm says. Its key element is the Open Peripheral Connect unit – an intelligent peripheral controller that supports the connection of desired retail peripherals and contains non-volatile CMOS memory to store configuration details, non-resettable trading totals, error logs and audit data. This means the personal computer itself remains unmodified and can be upgraded or exchanged without other modification to the system. Industry standard peripherals can also be added at any stage without affecting the existing configuration. Separately, in the US, ICL has signed a development and marketing agreement with Electronic Data Systems Corp, under the which ICL will lead a joint development programme with Electronic Data to enhance ICL’s Access Manager security system, which controls users’ access to applications and services on computer networks. Electronic Data will validate and implement the evolving product and expects to use it in its own enterprise network for potentially 100,000 users, as well as in some customer environments. ICL will market the product worldwide, both directly and through agents and resellers. In the US its marketing effort will be led by ICL Enterprises’ Reston, Virginia operation.
