IBM’S SHARE OF MAINFRAME DISK MARKET FELL IN 1996

By CBR Staff Writer

Even throwing its lot in with StorageTek Corp, reselling the company’s Iceberg RAID subsystems hasn’t helped IBM Corp improve its showing in the mainframe disk storage market. Meta Group reckons IBM’s share of the S/390 storage market slipped five points to 32% in 1996, despite a 52% increase in the market overall. EMC’s share grew to 44%. Meta expects the market to be split along similar lines in 1997 although growth is supposed to slow to 45%. While IBM will maintain its 32% share through price adjustments, Meta believes Hitachi Data Systems will win an 18% share as its new 7700 series begins to take business away from EMC at the high-end of the market. Price/performance is set to improve by 35% in the year.
