At DB/Expo in San Francisco, IBM Corp revamped its DB/2 database to support up to 32 System 390 mainframes, each with up to ten processors each. Version 5 of DB2 for OS/390, now renamed DB2 Database Server, is available from next month, and includes extended user defined types for table functions, native TCP/IP support via IBM’s Distributed Relational Database Architecture (DRDA) and the ability to deploy applets with its Net.Data web publishing application. Other features include access to VSAM, ODBC support, SQL optimization, data-aggregation features, and support for up to 1Tb as well as Parallel Sysplex support for up 320 processors and thousands of concurrent users. Java and object support is promised. Universal Server for Unix and NT it will include support for object/relational data and Java in the next release.
