IBM Corp has wrung out a few more MIPS performance out of its G5 mainframes, reports the Meta Group. The 10-way 9672 YX6 is rated at 1,065 MIPS using the 155 MIPS uniprocessor engine. And Meta says the next generation G6 will go to 12 ways and offer 30% to 40% more performance. It believes Amdahl Corp will ship a G5-equivalent in the first quarter of next year and a 16-way system in the second half of next year. Hitachi Data Systems Ltd should respond with a 12-way, 2,400 MIPS Bi-CMOS Skyline using a 280 MIPS to 300 MIPS engine.
