It has been accepted for some time now that the days of most of the 3380 disk drives were numbered, and IBM brought first confirmation yesterday with the announcement that, effective February 28, it is withdrawing from marketing the 3380 Models AD4/BD4 and AE4/BE4, including their eligibility for a trial programme, and their eligibility for request price quotations. Model and specify feature conversions will remain.
And, as reported briefly yesterday, IBM has come out with a string of enhancements to its Token Ring local area network, including support for 16Mbps transmission, against the previous limit of 4Mbps. New products include the Token Ring Network 16/4 Adaptors; 8220 Optical Fibre Converter; Token-Ring Network Bridge Program Versions 2.0 and 2.1; LAN Support Program Version 1.1; OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1; LAN Manager and LAN Manager Entry LAN Attaching Products; 3174 Subsystem Control Unit 3A Dual Speed Adaptor; 3745 16/4 Token-Ring Attachment Feature Card; 9370 Connectivity Enhancement for 16Mbps Token-Ring; Series/1 16/4 Token-Ring Attachment Card; AS/400 16/4 Token-Ring Network Attachment promise; 8232 LAN Channel Station; and the PC Network Bridge Program.
