IBM has decided to use its new 4M-bit memory chips first on the 80386-based models of the PS/2, and yesterday announced the PS/2 Enhanced 80386 Memory Options for the Models 70, P70 and 80, enabling users to install 16Mb with a single adaptor using a single expansion slot – but the 4M-bit chips are used only in the 4Mb kits, which will ship in the US in the first quarter of next year. There is a new 2Mb kit using 1M-bit chips at $1,800, with deliveries this week; the 4Mb Memory Expansion Option, $3,500, and the 4Mb Memory Module Kit, $3,100 are both set for the first quarter 1990, with limited ships in the fourth quarter. The 4M and 1M chips both have 85nS access time. For those who want the full 16Mb on one board, there must be at least 2Mb of planar memory, and they can use up to three 1Mb, 2Mb or 4Mb Memory Module kits in any combination in vacant sockets to make up 14Mb.
