IBM was a little late with its Tuesday announcement this week, which consisted of two new DisplayWrite releases, a program for teachers, and an aid for the deaf. The new DisplayWrite word processors are release 5/2 for OS/2, which is accompanied by 5/2 Composer for page layout and document composition. For the poor relations still using MS-DOS, there is DisplayWrite 4.2 with the functionality of 4/2 for OS/2. There are 18 DisplayWrite Dictionaries for use with both new versions. 5/2 is $500, 5/2 Composer is 700, both March 1989; 4.2 is $500 from December. The new LinkWay product one floppy 384Kb MS-DOS micros up, is designed to enable teachers to write class and admin applications, with examples for lesson planner, grade book, classroom resource manager, to-do list, and calendar. It is $110, $500 with a licence to copy 12 times, $660 for a networked version, from next February. And the PS/2 SpeechViewer uses a microphone to accept users’ speech sounds and then digitises, stores, instantly analyses and provides immediate feedback on screen. The kit, with speech adaptor card, microphone, speaker, application software, diagnostics, documentation and technical support costs $1,200, next month.
