IBM Corp has introduced a new Intellistation workstation, the M Pro, based around the Intel 840 chipset with Rambus memory for high-end graphics applications. The worksataion uses the new Pentium III Coppermine processor, running at up to 733MHz, with a 133MHz frontside bus. The machine supports up to 2Gb of Rambus memory, in a dual channel configuration that allows 1.6Gb of bandwidth per channel.

While Intel would like to see Rambus used in mid-range and high- end PCs, it is more likely to be used in workstations like the Intellistation – which need a ‘fat pipe’ for graphics-crunching capabilities. Graphics board designer PixelFusion Ltd has also committed to use Rambus DRAM in its radical board design.
