IBM Corp says it is now sampling its 25Mbps Asynchronous Transfer Mode Transceiver Chip Set, aimed at providing Asynchronous Transfer Mode to the desktop using voice grade or better wire. The set comprises two chips, the Transmission Convergence chip – providing scrambling and descrambling, 4B/5B encoding, and NRZI conversion – and the Physical Media-Dependent function chip for the transmission and reception of data. The Media-Dependent chip is also said to perform the equalisation, Phase Lock Loop clock and data recover, while the Transmission Convergence chip also incorporates an on-chip FIFO which is said to buffer up to two Asynchronous Transfer Mode cells, enabling multiple Transmission Convergence chips on a single receive data bus. Samples are available immediately for OEM customers and board level manufacturers, with quantity manufacture from July. No word yet on pricing.
