The new server and software bundle will be based on the first major update to the Informix Dynamic Server for two years. Code-named Cheetah, it is now in beta testing and is scheduled for release later this year.

IBM will bundle IDS Cheetah with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and IBM xSeries 3105 servers based on AMD’s Opteron 1000 Series processors.

IBM acquired the Informix database technology in 2001, and while its remains a strategic part of IBM’s software portfolio, it does not get as much attention as IBM’s DB2, and was last updated with the release of version 10.0 in February 2005.

Advancements slated for inclusion in Cheetah include spatial and temporal data management, encryption, label-based access control, and improved OLTP performance.
