Whatever the corporate opinion, IBM UK favours commercial Unix applications and not just technical and engineering ones, because that is where the money is – but how the staid and conservative IBM is going to keep up with all the RISC-based competition dripping with MIPS remains to be seen: a key solution is to come up with lots of applications, and the problem there is that IBM is not the greatest applications development shop in the world, and there are too many third parties that were seduced to write for the lacklustre RT and invited to write for its successor are muttering one bitten, twice shy.
