IBM Corp has turned to Burlington, Massachusetts-based Shiva Corp for the technology needed to create a remote server that can sit on a Token Ring local area network and enable people who travel on business, telecommuters and users of worldwide dial-in access and mobile networks to dial into and access machines on their company’s local network. Shiva’s relevant products are LanRover/T and LanRover/E. The system, previewed at the InterOp show in San Francisco this week, will also support Ethernet, and IBM promises ease of configuration, concurrent support for a wide variety of access speeds, multiple port access, multiprotocol support over a single link with Frame Relay support. It will also support IEEE 802.2 and NetBIOS applications and traditional IPX and TCP/IP traffic. Shiva describes the agreement as the most important development in the firm’s eight-year history.
