IBM Corp is planning to sell a significant number of the works of art in its collection, which is estimated to be worth $45m, BusinessWeek reported: they are to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s later this year; the IBM collection was started by founder Thomas Watson Sr, under whom IBM purchased about 300 works by American masters; the collection includes some American realist painters such as Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer and over the past 30 years, IBM has enhanced the collection with abstract works by Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler; it used to be possible to see some of the collection at IBM’s 590 Madison Avenue Gallery in Manhattan, but that is now gone.
