IBM Corp will reduce the worldwide workforce of its Personal Computer Co by between 2,000 to 3,000 employees before the end of the year as part of the plan to consolidate its personal computer operations, US PC Week believes. The company, as reported, has embarked on a plan to consolidate most of the business at the Raleigh, North Carolina manufacturing base, and distribution and fulfillment groups are expected to move from Atlanta over the next 18 months but the Power Personal Systems division will remain in Austin, Texas. Marketing support and brand management are expected to move from Somers, New York, but the executive management team is expected to stay in Somers. Most of the operations in Boca Raton, Florida making the move. IBM said only that it has not announced anything and that the employees would be the first to know.
