As part of the deal, some 380 WellPoint IT jobs will move to IBM.
IBM will now handle portions of WellPoint’s IT infrastructure operations, according to WellPoint spokesperson Greg Kueterman. The contract covers data center services, scheduling, IT management and tech support, as well as support areas around certain WellPoint business units, such as customer Web sites duties and help desk services.
The deal only represents a small segment of WellPoint’s overall IT operations, which include about 3,000 employees, Kueterman said. He said there are no specific plans to outsource any other IT services, although the company continues to look for cost-savings opportunities.
