News that IBM Corp was planning to deliver software worldwide over the IBM Global Network conjured up visions of the company taking on the home shopping networks and causing a cheery little face to pop up suddenly in a corner of your Windows 3 screen on your multimedia computer and say something like Hey! I see you’re still using Windows – let me show you how much easier that would be with OS/2! Sadly, the truth is more prosaic, and the company is simply joining the army of suppliers that enable you to download software to your machine from a network instead of fiddling with cling film and floppies. The service is being tested this year with Sears, Roebuck & Co this year, and will launch next year.
