IBM, also the No. 1 server vendor worldwide, outgrew its closest server rival by a large margin in U.S. server revenue — increasing at a year-to-year rate of 21 percent in the first quarter of 2001. The Dataquest report to be issued next week reflects total server unit shipments and vendor revenue for each of the regions of the world in the first quarter of 2001.
The latest figures from Dataquest demonstrate IBM’s server leadership in the United States and throughout the world and continue to indicate that the IBM lineup is winning in the marketplace, said Mark Shearer, vice president of marketing, IBM . Open, flexible IBM systems are the servers of choice for customers building today’s e-business infrastructures.
The Dataquest numbers demonstrate IBM’s strong UNIX server performance in both the United States and Europe.
Dataquest reported that IBM gained 5.4 share points in the UNIX server market segment in the United States in the first quarter over the previous year – more than twice the share gain of its nearest UNIX rival in vendor revenue terms.The report also showed that IBM’s U.S. UNIX server revenue share rose to 21.3 percent in the first quarter, up from 15.9 percent the previous year.
In Europe, IBM’s UNIX end-user revenue growth in the first quarter was double that of its nearest UNIX rival – with IBM rising 34 percent.
A major factor in IBM’s server revenue growth and top ranking was the company’s introduction in October,2000 of IBM , a new generation of servers featuring mainframe-class reliability and scalability, support of open standards for the development of new applications and capacity on demand for managing the demands of e-business.
