IBM Corp says it has now sold its 50,000th Megstar 3590 tape drive, to McDonald’s Corp in Oakbrook, Illinois. McDonald’s uses 23 Magstars to back up its host MVS server, Unix servers and 200 NT servers. IBM first introduced the Magstar 3590 Model B in September 1995, and the Model E in April of this year (CI No 3,640). It says it has sold some 4,000 drives into Storage Technology Corp silos. Approximately 20% of Magstars are sold into the AS/400 market, which Storagetek is now aiming for, but IBM says it has yet to see any competition from Storagetek in that market.
